Incurably Alive

Nieuleczalnie Żywa
by Longina Poterek-Krenz

1988

"Incurably Alive" by the Poznań artist Longina Poterek-Krenz consists of 9 sheets embroidered with the application technique, presenting the image of a woman in 9 phases - from a young girl who discovers a woman in herself and her own incurable living nature, to a woman who gives life - a mother. Nine stages, like nine months of pregnancy, praise the feminine and non-volatile nature. Conscious use of a sheet, intimate material, and at the same time a story that almost every girl can identify with, gives the work liveliness and universality. The work was created in 1988 and during the premiere exhibition at the Arsenał Gallery in Poznań, the artist complemented the project with an element - a doll - sewn by her 12-year-old daughter, Anna Krenz.
The title "Incurably Alive" (Nieuleczalnie żywa) refers to poetry book by Urszula Zybura.
